The Marvel Cinematic Universe’S Movie Villain Problem

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’S Movie Villain Problem

The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s bank-busting run in theaters only further proves that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the top juggernaut’s in entertainment business, on both movie and TV screens. But even as films like The Avengers, Guardians of The Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier have thrilled audiences with superhero adventure, there’s been one point of general criticism that hasn’t gone away: villains in the MCU tend to be underwhelming.

Now Avengers 2 is finding itself hit with similar criticisms, despite having a fan-favorite foe (Ultron) played by a unique, fan-favorite actor (James Spader). So why is Marvel Studios having such a hard time putting great baddies on the big screen? We breakdown the situation, as well as what Marvel could do in order to correct it.

Here is the list of MCU villains in order of their first appearance onscreen. NOTE: While “big bads” are the main focus of this discussion, we’ve included a lot of the “little bads” as well.

Ten Rings – Obidiah Stane / Iron Monger (Iron Man)
Gen. “Thunderbolt” Ross  – Abomination (Incredible Hulk)
Justin Hammer  – Whiplash (Iron Man 2)
Loki  – Frost Giants  – Destroyer (Thor)
Red Skull – Arnim Zola – Old Hydra (Captain America: TFA)
Chitauri – The Other – Thanos (The Avengers)
Aldrich Killian / “The Mandarin”  – Extremis Soldiers – A.I.M.  (Iron Man 3)
Malekith – Kurse – Dark Elves (Thor: TDW)
Winter Soldier – Alexander Pierce – New Hydra (Captain America: TWS)
Ronan The Accuser – Nebula (Guardians of the Galaxy)
Baron von Stucker – Ultron – Ultron Legion (Avengers: AoU)

How ‘Thor’ Can Continue After Phase 3 Of Marvel Cinematic Universe

How ‘Thor’ Can Continue After Phase 3 Of Marvel Cinematic Universe

To be excited about superhero movies is to always wonder, what’s next? Even when Marvel Studios unveiled years worth of release dates and film titles in October, a series of movies forming what’s known as Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we had to ask how the franchise continues afterwards.

New characters are getting their own movies (Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange), familiar characters are getting sequels (Thor, Captain America, and the Guardians of the Galaxy), and there’s even one getting a reboot (Spider-Man). All of these stories are really just chapters in a larger long story, one that seems to culminate in Avengers: Infinity War. We don’t know much about what happens after this two-part movie event outside of Inhumans, because no other films have been announced, and most of the leading actors have contracts that expire by then.

For that reason, it’s becoming increasingly interesting to follow major events in Marvel Comics, a medium that seems to reshape itself to somewhat follow and somewhat setup events in the far-more-lucrative movie business. Last year alone, we met a new version of Iron Man, a mysterious female character becoming Thor, and another supporting character (Falcon) picking up the mantle (and shield) of Captain America to form a new Avengers team. It’d be crazy to think that beyond the obvious goal of boosting diversity in lead Marvel characters that some of these decisions aren’t laying groundwork for Marvel’s film division to have more options when it comes to continuing successful brands without the leading actors who started each series.

Sex on the beach a brief history of Cannes and erotic cinema

Sex on the beach a brief history of Cannes and erotic cinema

The posters, the trailers, the teaser trailers, and the teaser-posters are all emerging. And though it is rash to generalise, there is a certain preponderance of flesh, lust and concupiscence at this year’s Cannes film festival. In Valérie Donzelli’s Marguerite and Julien, there is incest. In Todd Haynes’s Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, there is forbidden love. In the poster for Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, a somewhat haggard Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel appear to be ogling an unclothed young woman from the vantage point of their hot tub. And perhaps most startlingly of all, the great enfant terrible Gaspar Noé has revealed on the web a explicit “poster” for his quaintly titled Love, the 3D sex film that is showing as a midnight screening. It is not clear if this poster could possibly exist anywhere but online. Displayed in shopping malls and tube stations, it might mean that members of the public wishing to walk past it must present proof of age to a specially positioned squadron of police to show that they are 18 or over.

Even when there is no actual sex on the screen, there is always a great deal of intensely publicised sexiness at the festival. The gowns, the bling, the paparazzi, the swimming pool at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc – it is all suffused and perfumed with generalised sexiness, a concept that merges with being rich, famous and desirable. Cannes encourages a televised theatre of glamour on the red carpet every night, which is adored by L’Oréal, the festival’s major sponsor. In their hearts, some people believe that this kind of sexiness is sexier than sex.

‘Ex Machina’ Review

‘Ex Machina’ Review

In the near-future, young computer coder Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), working for the world’s most powerful tech company, is selected to assist in an unorthodox experiment. Caleb travels far from his office job to an isolated homestead, and research facility, of the company’s reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac) for a weeklong visit. However, when the eager employee actually meets his employer, Caleb finds that, in his isolation, Nathan has become unhinged and obsessive – rarely seen without an alcoholic drink in hand.

Nevertheless, when Nathan reveals to Caleb the purpose of his visit, the coder dismisses his initial discomfort (and fear) in favor of jumping head-long into scientific discovery. Hidden away in his compound, Nathan has been working on an advanced artificial intelligence named Ava (Alicia Vikander) – and has brought Caleb in as a consultant, hoping the programmer can successfully administer a Turing Test: intended to determine if an A.I.’s personality and self-awareness is equal or greater than a flesh-and-blood human (meaning the A.I.’s “artificial” intelligence is imperceptible to “normal” people).

Ex Machina marks the directorial debut of 28 Days writer Alex Garland – a name that should be familiar to viewers of other fan-favorite genre stories: Sunshine and Dredd, especially. While Garland didn’t spend much time in a director’s chair prior to his work on Ex Machina (depending on how much you believe about the upheavals on Dredd‘s set), the acclaimed novelist and screenwriter has collaborated closely with several high-profile filmmakers (including Danny Boyle). As a result, while certain moviegoers might be skeptical that a freshman filmmaker could deliver a thought-provoking, visually arresting, and outright haunting sci-fi story, Ex Machina is definitive proof of Garland’s talent on the page and behind the camera.

Which Characters Get The Most Screen Time In ‘Avengers Age Of Ultron’

Which Characters Get The Most Screen Time In ‘Avengers Age Of Ultron’

With Avengers: Age of Ultron, writer and director Joss Whedon brings back the six heroes known as “Earth’s Mightiest” from 2012’s record-breaking team-up epic, and adds to it with several new super-powered characters from Marvel Comics. With even more main characters, more supporting players, and even a few special cameos, how is the screen time divided between so many actors?

That’s part of the problem in servicing not just character arcs, but the desires of the talent bringing them to life onscreen, and fortunately this is what Whedon specializes in. You might be surprised however, in just how much time each character gets on screen for the Avengers sequel.

Joining Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Hulk in the fray for the sequel are the twins, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, alongside the android Avenger known as the Vision. Here’s how their screen time was observed and measured thanks to an army of interns at Vulture who used stopwatches to time whenever each of Age of Ultron’s nine Avengers were on screen, even for brief appearances such as Quicksilver’s speedy movements. It may not be entirely accurate, but...

8 Movies We’re Looking Forward To May 2015

8 Movies We’re Looking Forward To May 2015

With the notable exception of Furious 7, April was relatively quiet in terms of big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. That Vin Diesel-led action extravaganza – which also heavily featured a farewell tribute to the late Paul Walker – became a record-breaking box office success for Universal, while the studio’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina earned critical praise for the directorial debut by screenwriter Alex Garland (Dredd). However, the summer movie season finally takes flight this month. So let’s take a look at which films are hitting theaters this month, including several of our most-anticipated films of 2015.

Here are the 8 films to watch for in May 2015:

Avengers: Age of Ultron (Release Date: May 1)

Way back in 2012, Marvel’s The Avengers was released to much anticipation from fans and ended up bringing in more than $1 billion worldwide. Now, with nearly every other major studio embracing shared universes, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is faced with proving the continued viability of that model and preparing the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Phase Three (and, ultimately, the heroes’ showdown with Thanos in the two-part Avengers: Infinity War).

Asa Butterfield Is Rumored Frontrunner For Marvel’s New ‘Spider-Man’

Asa Butterfield Is Rumored Frontrunner For Marvel’s New ‘Spider-Man’

In the coming weeks, or even days, superhero movie fans are going to learn the identity of the third actor to play Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man in the live-action film franchise. Normally, the recasting of such a popular character happening so shortly after two other actors (Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield) played the character in the last eight years, would pose problems for a film series that’s lost momentum but this is a very unique case.

This new Spider-Man, although arguably overly familiar since it will again be the Peter Parker version, is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Spider-Man is going to be a member of The Avengers and that makes this imminent casting more important than any other from the Spidey universe before it.

A combined result of the efforts of Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, with a push from a very large and vocal fanbase, an unprecedented partnership agreement between two film studios will see the Spider-Man live-action movie universe merge with Marvel’s own established franchise. And to kick things off, the new Spider-Man is going to be introduced next year in Captain America: Civil War.

4 New ‘Terminator: Genisys’ International TV Spots Reveal More SPOILERS

4 New ‘Terminator: Genisys’ International TV Spots Reveal More SPOILERS

While early season blockbusters like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World are currently dominating media focus, Terminator: Genisys is starting to gain some marketing steam. Directed by Thor: The Dark World‘s Alan Taylor and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, and Jason Clarke, the fifth installment of the sci-fi/action franchise is sitting in the prime July 4th weekend slot, and Paramount Pictures is hoping the one-two punch of Genisys and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nationwill feature enough thrills and spectacle to compete with the aforementioned competition.

As is the case with all potential summer blockbuster in the modern era, the foreign box office receipts are a huge concern, so Paramount has amped up the film’s media presence overseas with the release of these five new International TV spots featuring even more new footage from the film. Be warned, though – like the previous controversial trailer released last month, these International TV spots continue to SPOIL the big twist of the film.

In addition to more material involving *that* spoiler, one of the spots also features a major revelation about the film’s enigmatic subtitle.

Meghan Trainor Says Performing In Front Of Harry Styles Is ‘Terrifying’

Meghan Trainor Says Performing In Front Of Harry Styles Is ‘Terrifying’

Meghan Trainor can perform in front of thousands of people, but there’s one person she’s terrified to face.

That person was the one and only Harry Styles.

The two teamed up to record a duet a few months ago, but when recalling their first meeting to Teen Vogue, she said she had some butterflies. In all fairness, Harry does that to everyone.

“Performing a love song in front of Harry is terrifying, and on top of that I was a little nervous because he was one of the first celebrities I met,” she said before giving some more details on their song. “It’s a cute little number called ’Someday Maybe.’ It needs a good home.”

Meghan, who said to us that we will hear the track “someday, maybe,” went on to praise the One Direction star for his songwriting skills.

‘X-Men Apocalypse’: Nightcrawler Actor Hints at Mystique Connection

‘X-Men Apocalypse’ Nightcrawler Actor Hints at Mystique Connection

When X-Men: First Class premiered, the prequel introduced younger versions of well-known characters like Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender). Last year, X-Men: Days of Future Past essentially rebooted 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe by rewriting the past, though the franchise still suffers from continuity inconsistencies. However, due to the ending of Days of Future Past, the next film, X-Men Apocalypse will see new versions of even more characters that appeared in X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand.

In addition to recasting Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Ororo Munroe a.k.a. Storm, Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse will also feature a younger iteration of Jeff Wagner a.k.a. Nightcrawler to be played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. Now, Smit-McPhee has spoken about creating a new version of the character and teased Nightcrawler’s “traditional” aspects.

While promoting his new film with fellow X-Men star Fassbender, Slow West, Smit-McPhee told Den of Geek his portrayal of Nightcrawler will reflect the character that fans were introduced to in the comics. He will be “fun, happy” as well as “vulnerable and truthful” while also tied to his faith in Catholicism. Smit-McPhee also teased other traditional aspects of the character, which will be featured in X-Men: Apocalypse as well.

‘Wolverine 3′ Script Now Being Written by Michael Green

‘Wolverine 3′ Script Now Being Written by Michael Green

Hugh Jackman will be starring in at least one more Wolverine solo movie (tentatively referred to as Wolverine 3), before he’s done playing Logan in the X-Men movie franchise. The new film is slated for release in 2017 and shall reunite Jackman with his The Wolverine director James Mangold – but beyond that, details are scarce right now.

David James Kelly, who penned a script for Fox’s Daredevil movie reboot that never happened, was previously reported to be working on the Wolverine 3 script (under Mangold’s guidance) – possibly borrowing plot elements from the “Old Man Logan” comic book storyline for his screenplay. Patrick Stewart has also indicated that the film might build on the conclusion to X-Men: Days of Future Past, given the… unusual relationship that Stewart’s Professor X and Logan now have after the movie’s timeline-altering events (as only Charles knows Logan still remembers the original timeline).

The Wrap is reporting that Michael Green has now taken over Wolverine 3 screenwriting duties, with Mangold still actively overseeing the script development process. Green has been quite busy of late; he worked on the screenplays for Blade Runner 2 (which begins shooting next year) and Prometheus 2 (potentially Ridley Scott’s next project), in addition to collaborating with Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller on the American Gods TV series adaptation (expected to premiere on Starz in 2016).

‘Pacific Rim 2,’ ‘Warcraft’ & More Get New Release Dates

‘Pacific Rim 2,’ ‘Warcraft’ & More Get New Release Dates

In addition to its lucrative Fast & Furious and Fifty Shades of Grey franchises, Universal Pictures is broadening its blockbuster appeal in the coming years. The studio is building a shared universe based on classic monsters, which will include last year’s Dracula Untold and the upcoming The Mummy. Additionally, Universal is releasing two Legendary Pictures films in 3D as part of their five-year deal: Warcraft, based on the online role-playing game, and Pacific Rim 2.

At CinemaCon this week, Universal announced release dates for Fast & Furious 8 as well as the two Fifty Shades of Grey sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Additionally, the studio unveiled new or changed release dates for its other upcoming features.

Universal revealed both Legendary films will be pushed back a few months, Warcraft from March 11th, 2016 to June 10th, 2016, and Pacific Rim 2 from April 7th, 2017 to August 4th, 2017. As for the monster movies, The Mummy was pushed from June 24th, 2016 to March 24th, 2017, and an untitled monster film was moved from April 21st, 2017 to March 30th, 2018.

Furthermore, Universal announced Mena, the thriller headlined by Tom Cruise, will debut January 6th, 2017. Variety is reporting that Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) is in talks to join the feature, which will reunite Cruise with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. Gleeson has risen in popularity in the past few years, which is reflected in his schedule that includes Ex Machina, The Revenant, and, of course, Star Wars 7.

‘Transformers 5′ Expected in 2017; Shared Universe Confirmed

‘Transformers 5′ Expected in 2017; Shared Universe Confirmed

Marvel Studios has made shared universe multimedia franchises the most cohesive and lucrative entertainment business model of the 21st Century. But even as DC Comics/Warner Bros. and Star Wars (the grandaddy of all shared universes) both gear up for some shared universe expansions of their brands, it seems that almost every blockbuster franchise wants to change up their business model to compete in a post-Marvel world – and that includes the Transformers franchise.

Today we get official confirmation that the Transformers shared universe is coming – as well as word that indicates Transformers 5 will be arriving in 2017.

TFW2005 kept eye on the Hasbro Quarter 1 earnings conference call, where executives talked plans for the future of Transformers.

‘Avengers 2′ Early Reviews: Marvel’s Sequel Falls Just Short of Greatness

‘Avengers 2′ Early Reviews: Marvel’s Sequel Falls Just Short of Greatness

The most highly-anticipated comic book movie of summer 2015 is nearly upon us, and with the European release of Avengers: Age of Ultron beginning this week, the first full reviews for Joss Whedon’s second team-up adventure have begun pouring in.

Avengers: Age of Ultron pits Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Vision against Tony Stark’s AI creation Ultron, who decides after gaining sentience that the best way to achieve the Avengers’ vision of world peace is simply to blast all of humanity out of existence. Let it not be said that robots can’t come up with creative interpretations of human concepts.

The film got a lot of enthusiastic early reactions on Twitter, but experience has taught us that initial reactions tend to hyperbolize (especially when limited to 140 characters), and that it’s better to wait for reviewers to articulate their thoughts in full. Now the first reviews for Avengers: Age of Ultron are in and the critical consensus is that it’s… good – perhaps even great, but definitely not perfect.

“Captain Jack is back and we’re not letting him go,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted Tuesday. In the photo, Depp’s character looks decidedly panicked as he’s tied up by thick ropes and flanked by two menacing pirates.

Production on Pirates 5 was temporarily halted when Depp left the set after injuring his hand during filming in early March.

‘Jurassic World’ Trailer #2: It’s Not About Control

‘Jurassic World’ Trailer #2: It’s Not About Control

65 million 22 years in the making, Jurassic World is speeding toward theaters for the summer 2015 blockbuster season. In a year when fans will be treated to the return of classic film series Star Wars, Mad Max, and The Terminator, in addition to high profile superhero fare The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fantastic Four, and Ant-Man, for many moviegoers Colin Trevorrow’s return to Jurassic Park remains at the top of their viewing list.

Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg’s dino DNA film was an evolutionary leap forward in CGI visuals but, even two decades later, the film still holds-up – thanks to a mix of memorable scenes, convincing special effects, and all-around fun (not to mention quotable characters) – making it all the more challenging for Trevorrow to revive the franchise. Now, less than two months before the film’s release, fans are getting another sneak peek at what waits behind the Jurassic World gates – with an all new, and more revealing, trailer.

Even if Trevorrow can never supersede Jurassic Park, based on the latest full length Jurassic World trailer, the filmmaker appears to have (at the very least) delivered an entertaining thriller – with dinosaurs. Much like the initial “The Park is Open” teaser, the second trailer offers plenty of reverence to the series’ past – while also pushing the franchise forward into a bold new direction.

48 Summer Movies We Can't Wait to See

Terminator Genisys (July 1)

Ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator first zapped down to Earth in his birthday suit 31 years ago, fans of the franchise have relied on the idea of John Connor as the savior of the human race. But in Terminator Genisys, Connor’s heroism is less certain. And that mystery made Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) excited to take on the iconic character. “The script expands on our preconceived notions of who John Connor is,” he says. “So I knew I couldn’t just show up and lay down some hard military guy. There’s a lot more going on than that.” The time-travel-heavy plot toggles between 1984, 2017, and 2029 and introduces both a new Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and a new Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney). The filmmakers also aim to remind audiences what they love about these movies—which, according to Schwarzenegger, who reprises his role in Genisys, all comes down to the title character.

‘Batman V Superman’ Official Trailer False Gods Will Bleed

‘Batman V Superman’ Official Trailer False Gods Will Bleed

You can’t say that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t without its fair share of fans, given the hunger for any and all footage of the DC Comics team-up. After months of rumors telling when the trailer would drop (and what degree of ‘awesome-ness’ it would contain), the last few days have seen a flurry of activity.

First came word that fans would be able to register for an IMAX viewing of the teaser trailer, confirmed by director Zack Snyder – with a brief glimpse of Henry Cavill’s Kryptonian threads and Ben Affleck’s new Batsuit. But once the teaser made it to theaters, online leaks followed almost immediately – urging Warner Bros. to release the official teaser, and ensure the world’s first glimpse at the film isn’t through grainy recordings alone.

The previous claims of a “Batman-heavy” teaser proved only somewhat accurate, as the trailer quickly shows that Snyder’s desire to examine humanity, fear, and a grounded reaction to an alien messiah is alive and well. It’s well-documented that WB and DC’s “edgier” look at comic superheroes isn’t for everyone; but for those wishing to see heroes like Superman and Batman – particularly Frank Miller’s “Dark Knight Returns” version - taken “seriously,” the trailer leaves little doubt.
